As Chair of Sakarya University’s Department of Sociology, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our department website. For over 22 years the department has contributed to the university’s grant mission by educating its students, advancing a scientific understanding of our communities and their problems, and by offering solutions for issues that confront our society. Our department has a long tradition of academic excellence and a proven track record of training new generations of students. Our faculty members specialize in a range of substantive areas, boast numerous areas of theoretical expertise, and employ a diversity of methodological approaches to the study of society and culture — ranging from the quantitative analyses of survey and opinion data to ethnographic accounts of social movements.
We offer undergraduate degree programs in Sociology, as well as Masters and Doctoral degrees in Sociology. Our PhD program offers specializations in Environment & Health, Urban Sociology, Gender, and Globalization, as well as an over-arching emphasis on understanding the causes and consequences of Social Inequality both within and between societies. Our department also maintains strong connections to an array of research centers and institutes in Turkey in general, in Sakarya in particular.
Our courses enhance students' abilities to examine critically the social conventions and regulations that circumscribe our lives, and to explore possibilities for progressive social change. Students gain skills in designing social research, thinking critically, analyzing statistical data, computing, writing and making oral presentations. Our graduates move into a variety of fields, such as law, social work and teacher education, as well as pursuing further education in graduate school.
We welcome and encourage your interest in our department. Feel free to contact faculty individually or visit the department in person. Support staff and academic advisors are available to assist students in making a successful transition to university culture. We are currently overhauling our department website and will continue to expand and update the information made available here. In addition, you may contact me directly if you have questions about the department or information you would like to share with us.
Best wishes,
Mustafa Kemal SAN
